What Is Changing?
The updated laws require homes to have photoelectric smoke alarms that are interconnected. This means that when one alarm activates, all alarms in the house sound at the same time, giving occupants the earliest possible warning.
These requirements have been introduced in stages over several years, with the final stage applying to all owner-occupied homes from 1 January 2027.

- 1 January 2017: New homes and substantially renovated homes required compliant alarms.
- 1 January 2022: Rental properties and homes being sold became subject to the new requirements.
- 1 January 2027: All owner-occupied homes must comply.
Who Does It Apply To?
The requirements apply to:

If your home still has older ionisation alarms, alarms that are not interconnected or alarms that are more than 10 years old, an upgrade may be required.
What Does a Compliant System Include?
A compliant smoke alarm system must include:
- Photoelectric smoke alarms
- Interconnection between alarms
- An alarm in every bedroom
- An alarm in hallways connecting bedrooms
- At least one alarm on each level of the home
Correct placement is also important, as alarms installed in the wrong location may not provide effective warning and can be more prone to false alarms.
Can You Install Them Yourself?
Routine testing and battery replacement can usually be carried out by homeowners. However, hardwired smoke alarms and interconnected systems should be installed by a licensed electrician to ensure they meet current standards and are installed correctly.
